Most benefits for blue-collar and contract workers were set up years ago and rarely reviewed. A yearly review shows what workers actually use, what is broken and what is missing. Use this checklist with your HR, admin and contractor teams.
1. Statutory basics
- PF deducted and credited on time for all eligible workers, including contract workers
- ESI registration active, and workers can use their cards at hospitals
- Bonus, leave and overtime paid as per law
- Contractors' statutory payments verified each month
2. Pay accuracy and timing
- Attendance captured accurately, with few manual corrections
- Overtime calculated correctly and shown on payslips
- Wages paid on time, every cycle
- Digital payslips available in the worker's language
3. Access to money
- Workers can access earned wages before payday, for example through Earned Wage Access
- Salary advance policy written, if advances are still given
- Number of informal advance requests tracked
4. Health and safety
- Accident cover in place for working hours
- First aid, safety gear and training in place
- Safe transport for night shifts, especially for women workers
5. Daily experience
- Canteen quality and pricing reviewed
- Drinking water, rest areas and toilets maintained
- Grievance channel available and used
6. Communication
- Workers know what benefits they have
- Information available in local languages
- Contractors brief their workers on benefits
How to run the review
- Collect data: attendance, payroll, grievances, exits and advance requests.
- Run short worker conversations or anonymous surveys.
- Score each item: working, partly working, missing.
- Fix the broken basics first, then add new benefits.
Frequently asked questions
- How often should we review benefits?
- Once a year in full, with quick checks on statutory items every month.
- Which new benefit gives the most impact for low cost?
- Earned Wage Access is among the easiest to add. It needs no employer capital with an NBFC-funded model and helps workers from the first week.
