ZKTeco is a global manufacturer of biometric identification and access control hardware, with a broad range covering fingerprint and face terminals, access controllers, turnstiles and barriers. Their devices are widely deployed internationally as well as across India.

eSSL is one of the most established biometric brands in the Indian market specifically, with deep distribution and a device range built around Indian attendance and access requirements.

Where they genuinely differ

Device range. Both cover fingerprint, face and card. ZKTeco's range extends further into access control infrastructure — controllers, turnstiles, barriers — which matters if you want one supplier across attendance and physical access.

Software. Both ship device management software. Both are, in our experience, adequate for a single site and increasingly awkward across many. This is the point where most multi-site deployments outgrow the bundled software and move device management onto a platform.

Availability and support. Both are widely available in India. Support quality depends far more on your supplier than on the brand — which is the real variable and the one buyers underweight.

What actually determines whether a deployment works

Having taken over a considerable number of estates originally installed by others, the failures cluster in the same places, and the brand is almost never one of them.

Device selection against gate conditions. A device chosen from a price list rather than a site survey — fingerprint readers at a dusty gate, indoor units in exposed positions, one lane where throughput needs three.

Enrolment quality. Rushed enrolment produces poor templates, poor templates produce failed matches, and failed matches produce manual attendance. This is the single largest cause of "the device does not work" complaints, and it has nothing to do with the device.

Nobody owning the fleet. Firmware versions drift. Enrolments accumulate for workers who left years ago. Devices fail quietly at gates nobody watches. Two years in, no one can say how many devices are deployed or which are working.

No integration. Devices record punches into their own log, and someone exports it monthly into a spreadsheet. Every problem attendance software is supposed to solve remains unsolved.

The multi-brand reality

Most plants we work with do not have a single-brand estate. They have devices bought over several years from whoever quoted at the time — some eSSL, some ZKTeco, occasionally three or four other brands, each with its own software and none talking to the others.

The practical answer is not standardising on one brand. It is putting one platform behind all of them, so a worker enrolled once is recognised everywhere, and one dashboard shows the whole estate regardless of what is on the box.

How to choose

  • Survey the gates first. Conditions determine modality; modality narrows the device list. Brand comes last.
  • Ask what happens in year two. Who manages firmware, who holds spares, who is called when a gate fails at 06:00.
  • Check what it connects to. A device that records attendance into its own log has solved the easy half of the problem.
  • Do not replace what works. Existing devices from any brand can usually be brought onto one platform without re-enrolling the workforce.
