The problem nobody mentions at purchase
A fingerprint reader needs a clean, intact, reasonably moist fingertip. That describes an accounts executive at 09:00. It does not describe a fitter at the end of a shift, a housekeeping worker who has been using cleaning chemicals, a welder, or anyone who handles abrasive material for a living.
Manual work wears down fingerprint ridges. Oil, dust, cement, chemicals and water all interfere with capture. Cold hands read badly. Aging reduces ridge definition. The result at a typical plant is a persistent group of workers — often 5 to 15% — whose fingerprints simply do not read reliably.
That group does not disappear. They queue, retry, fail, and eventually the security guard writes their name in a register. Every one of those manual entries becomes a payroll input nobody verified, and a dispute waiting for month-end.
What face recognition changes
Face recognition removes the contact requirement entirely. There is nothing to press, nothing to clean, nothing that wears out with manual labour. Recognition happens as the worker walks toward the reader, which also removes the queue — a face terminal handles 25 to 30 people per minute per lane, where a fingerprint reader handles considerably fewer once retries are counted.
It is not universally better. Face recognition is affected by extreme backlighting, by steep camera angles, and by heavy face covering. Poor enrolment produces poor matching. And the devices cost more.

The cost that does not appear on the quotation
Comparing device prices misses where the money actually goes.
A worker whose fingerprint fails produces a manual attendance entry. That entry is unverified, so it is disputable. At month-end someone reconciles it — usually HR, usually against a security register, usually under time pressure. Multiply by a persistent 5–15% of the workforce, twice a day, across a year.
That reconciliation work, and the disputes it produces, is the real comparison. Face terminals cost more per device and materially less per year in manual entries, payroll corrections and contractor billing arguments.
What we actually recommend, by situation
Plant gates with shift-change crowding → face terminals, or camera-based capture where mounting terminals at every lane is impractical.
Dusty, oily, wet or abrasive work → face, without hesitation. This is the case where fingerprint readers fail most predictably.
Offices and admin blocks → fingerprint is perfectly adequate. Clean hands, low volumes, lower cost per point.
Mixed sites → both, on one platform. A worker enrolled once should be recognised by any device, so the choice can be made gate by gate rather than site-wide.
Sites with existing camera coverage → evaluate CCTV-based attendance before adding hardware.
Distributed or moving worksites → neither; mobile capture with face verification and GPS.
The question to ask a vendor
Not "which is more accurate" — both are accurate under good conditions. Ask instead: what happens to the workers this device cannot read, and who handles their attendance?
A vendor without a clear answer has not deployed in a factory.
